11/13/2024 11:16:00 AM

DANBURY, Conn. - Each week, WestConn Athletics selects one female and one male student-athlete as the Wolves of the Week, recognizing their outstanding performances in their respective sports from the previous week. The honorees are announced every Wednesday.  The 11th Wolves of the Week of 2024 fall semester have been selected thanks to their strong performances on the soccer pitch. Men's soccer junior Zach Benson (Derby, Conn.) and women's soccer junior Sophia Onek (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and have been named as the Wolves of the Week.

Benson was honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the Little East Championship (LEC) Tournament, won by the Wolves on penalty kicks against Rhode Island College on Saturday. Benson made four saves in WestConn's 4-1 victory over Plymouth State in the LEC Semifinals and added five stops to record a shutout, as the Wolves played the Anchormen to a scoreless draw in the LEC Finals. In the first round of penalty kicks, Griffith stopped three of four attempts to clinch the win for WestConn, 3-1.

Onek scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win at UMass Boston in the LEC Semifinals, having notched a goal and an assist in the Wolves' 5-1 victory over Plymouth State in the LEC First Round two days earlier. Onek also anchored the WestConn defense that yielded just two goals in the first two games of the LEC Championship Tournament
