WestConn Baseball Outlasts Albertus Magnus

HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman Nick Lobuono (Trumbull, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs and accounted for the game-winning run in the ninth inning with a solo homer to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 9-8 win over the Albertus Magnus College Falcons in baseball action this afternoon at Rochford Park.  WestConn snaps an eight-game losing skid and improves to 9-23, while the Falcons drop to 9-22.  The Wolves will close the 2025 season with a Little East Conference (LEC) doubleheader at Southern Maine on Friday at noon.

WestConn trailed, 4-1, after four innings but plated four runs in the fifth to take the lead.  Sophomore OF Richard Salonia (Bronx, N.Y.) singled early in the inning and scored on a two-run single by senior Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.).  Lobuono added an RBI double to drive home Moeller and the Falscons helped WestConn's cause with two errors in the inning.

Albertus Magnus answered with three runs in the sixth frame, but the Wolves came right back and scored three more to go ahead, 8-7, after seven innings.  Lobuono singled and scored on a wild pitch, graduate 1B Connor Corcoran (Danbury, Conn.) doubled and scored a run, and both Salonia and sophomore SS Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) delivered two-out, RBI singles in the seventh for the Wolves.

Tha Falcons tied the game at 8-all on a solo shot by Shawn Smith but Wolves senior righty Brian Mansfield (Lynbrook, N.Y.) entered the game and tossed two scoreless innings with five strikeouts to collect his second win of the year (2-4).  Salonia finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Corcoran and sophomore 2B Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) each had two hits for WestConn.  Freshman Brayden Barron (Southington, Conn.) started for the Wolves and allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts,
