McMahon Erupts as Men's Lax Rolls Past Eastern

MANSFIELD, Conn. - Junior middie Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) racked up a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists to propel the visiting Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team past archrival Eastern Connecticut, 20-7, on Wednesday afternoon. Senior attack Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) added four goals, while classmate Peter Traina (East Moriches, N.Y.) and graduate student Liam Ford (New Fairfield, Conn.) each chipped in with a hat trick. Senior midfielder Matt Sweeney (Rocky Point, N.Y) also got in on the action with one tally and three assists.

Warren Channing and Tanner Drobish paced the Warriors with two goals apiece, while Cooper Piesco chipped in with one scoring strike and a helper.

The Wolves pummeled the Warriors with a 56-23 shots advantage while graduate student face-off specialist Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) earned 16-of-27 wins from the X.

The visitors broke the ice less than four minutes into the contest when graduate student attack Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) took a pass from McMahon and buried a man-up marker. Duque wrapped up the first quarter with an unassisted tally, giving WestConn a 5-1 lead. He then opened the second with another goal off a feed from Sweeney before netting his 37th goal of the season nine seconds before halftime, widening the gap to 11-3.

The Wolves didn't take the foot off the gas in the third, outscoring the Warriors 7-1. Duque rounded out the run with his fourth of the game off yet another pretty pass from McMahon to make it 18-4 heading into the fourth. WestConn would not allow Eastern a rally en route to the win.

With the victory, the Wolves improved to 9-6 overall and 6-0 in Little East Conference play, while the Warriors notched their fourth straight loss, dropping to 4-7 and 1-5. WestConn returns to action for another league matchup when they host Salem State on Senior Day at the WAC on Saturday at 1 p.m.
