WESTFIELD, Mass. - Junior attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) racked up a game-high four goals and two assists, while graduate student midfielder
Vicky Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) added a hat trick and one helper to guide the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory at non-conference foe Westfield State University on Friday evening at Alumi Field.
Senior attacker
Savannah Kom (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with two goals while sophomore
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) earned a game-high nine draw controls for the Wolves. Kylie Buchanan led the hosts with a trio of goals, while Arianna Andresen notched a scoring strike and two assists.
Most of the stat columns were nearly identical in this tightly contested matchup. However, WestConn dominated possession en route to winning 17-of-24 draw controls.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the second quarter, the Wolves put together a 4-1 run to capture a 7-5 halftime advantage. Sophomore middie
Morgan Brace (Brewster, N.Y.) rounded out the run with a power-play tally off a nifty feed from Ratchford.
It would remain close throughout the second half but the Wolves would not relinquish the lead. The visitors stretched it to 10-7 early in the fourth when Ratchford connected on her fourth strike of the game. Gracy made it 11-8 with 6:31 remaining before Westfield hit the back of the twine with two minutes to go, rounding the count out at 11-9.
WestConn graduate student goal keeper
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) was her usual self as she smothered nine shots to improve to 5-0, while a pair of netminders split time in defeat for the hosts.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 5-0 overall while Westfield moved to 0-3. WestConn will look to extend the win streak to six when they head to NESCAC opponent Williams College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
