DANBURY, Conn. - Graduate student midfielder
Tyler Starrett (Redding, Conn.) notched four goals, while classmate attack
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) added a hat trick and two assists but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team fell to visiting non-conference opponent Connecticut College, 14-11, under the lights on Tuesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 3-2 overall while the Camels improved to 1-1. WestConn is now 0-4 in the all-time series versus the NESCAC based Conn. College.Â
Junior attack Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) led the visitors with four scoring strikes while sophomore middie Isaiah Kozub (Wilbraham, Mass.) chipped in with three goals and a helper.Â
The Wolves finished ahead in the shots column, 44-35, while holding a slight edge in ground balls, 31-29.Â
The hosts built up a 5-4 lead early in the second quarter when senior attack
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) buried his ninth goal of the campaign. However, Conn. College countered with a 5-0 run. They took a 6-5 halftime advantage before widening the gap to 9-5 in the third. But WestConn wouldn't go down without a fight as they answered with six of the next seven tallies. Starrett sparked the rally with his 10th of the season before rounding it out with his team-leading 11th, giving the hosts an 11-10 lead with 11:32 to play. The lead was short-lived as the Camels canned the final four goals of the contest to wrap the count up at 14-11.Â
WestConn will look to rebound when they travel to the University of Hartford for yet another non-league matchup on Saturday at Noon.
