CASTLETON, Vt. - Senior guard
Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) tallied a team-high 21 to points and a game-high eight rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to an 87-72 victory at Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday afternoon. Classmates
Jourdan Belcher (Elmsford, N.Y.) and
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) chipped in with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 12-8 overall and 8-3 in league play. The Spartans sank to 3-15 and 2-8.
Both teams shot the ball well as WestConn connected on 48 percent of its hoops, while Castleton hit at a 47 percent clip. However, the Wolves were more efficient from three-point territory, knocking down 5-of-12 while the Spartans went 9-of-24. The visitors forced 21 turnovers while committing just 16.
The lead changed hands often in the first half. WestConn snagged an early 11-7 advantage when
Jeremiah Williams sank a free throw. However, Castleton responded with a run to jump ahead 17-11 when Crisrael Lithgow converted a layup. The Wolves bounced back to even the count at 17-17 when
Tayejon Lynch drained another shot from the charity stripe. Shortly thereafter, they widened the advantage 39-32 when Lynch drained another pair from the line. They would hold a 39-34 lead at halftime.
The second half saw the Wolves' lead balloon to 17 with 14:24 remaining when
Marcel Henry hit a runner. Castleton fought back, trimming it to 69-62 when Lithgow canned a trifecta. However, WestConn would hold off the surge and extend the gap back up to 15 when Belcher rounded out the scoring.
WestConn notched its fourth straight victory. They return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against visiting archrival Eastern Connecticut.
