Fatmata Barrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team was downed at Little East Conference opponent Keene State College, 73-54, on Thursday night at Spaulding Gym.
Valerie Luizzi led the Owls with 16 points while Kiley Bundy chipped in with 15. Three other players reached double figures in scoring as the hosts netted 34 of their points inside the paint.Â
Keene State opened the game with a 9-0 run capped with a Bundy three-pointer. They took a 13-6 lead into the second quarter and would put together another surge to head into the locker room with a 17-point advantage, 33-16.Â
WestConn retaliated with a run of its own in the third, slicing the deficit to 37-32 midway through the period when Barrie sank a pair of free throws. However, the Owls quickly countered with a 12-0 run to widen the gap to 17 once again as the squads entered the fourth. The Wolves spent most of their energy with the third quarter rally and were unable to shrink the Owls' lead much in the stanza.
With the loss, WestConn dropped its seventh straight contest, moving to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in league play while Keene State improved to 7-8 and 3-3. The Wolves will seek to snap the skid when they host UMass Dartmouth in another conference battle on Saturday at 1 p.m.
