DANBURY, Conn. - Senior forward
Alyssa Virtue (Groton, Conn.) notched a team-high 18 points which included a pair of three-pointers but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team suffered an 87-52 loss to visiting UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Rookie forward
Nia Rencher (Wappingers Falls, N.Y) chipped in with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Four players reached double figures in scoring for the Corsairs. Graduate student forward Carly Whiteside (Barnstable, Mass.) tallied game-highs of 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor to go along with nine boards. Classmate guard Jane McCauley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 16 points off the bench.
The visitors dominated the glass, 54-30, while canning 11 shots from beyond-the-arc, while the hosts managed just three.
The game was close in the first quarter when Virtue powered home a layup to shrink the Corsairs lead to 21-16. She followed up with a three-pointer in the second quarter, cutting it to a four-point advantage. However, UMass Darmouth countered with a run to head into halftime with a 47-27 lead. The Wolves could not recover from the run.
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in LEC play, while the Corsairs improved to 13-2 and 7-0. WestConn gets a week of practice before they return to action, hosting yet another league matchup against Plymouth State on Alumnae Day, Saturday at 1 p.m.
