WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior forward
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) and rookie forward
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) notched 16 points apiece to lead five players in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to the University of Saint Joseph's (Maine), 98-84, in the consolation game of the Ted Coghlin Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Harrington Auditorium.
Junior
Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.), sophomore
C.J. Riley (Yonkers, N.Y.) and rookie
Nicholas Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) joined Boyce and Henry in double figures for the Wolves.
Julian Llopiz paced Saint Joseph's with a game-high 22 points, while Derek Salvatore chipped in with 20.
Both squads shot over 50 percent from the floor. However, Saint Joseph's drained 18 shots from three-point range while WestConn sank just three. St. Joseph's also connected on 77 percent of their shots from the charity stripe, while the Wolves hit at a 59 percent clip.
St. Joseph's opened the contest with a 12-5 run and would lead the rest of the way. They held a 45-40 lead at the break courtesy of a Salvatore bucket just before the buzzer. The Wolves sliced the deficit to just three when Henry drilled a pair of free throw attempts midway through the second stanza to make it 69-66. But the opponents cruised the rest of the way, widening the gap to 97-80 when Salvatore sank yet another trifecta.
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 1-3 overall while St. Joseph's improved to 2-2. The Wolves return to action at non-league foe York College (N.Y.) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
