Western women's soccer capture ninth LEC Regular-Season title

DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-0 at The WAC on Senior night Saturday.  With the win, the Colonials captured their ninth Little East Conference Regular-Season title and earn the top seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.

The Colonials, 14-5-1 overall finish the regular season with a 6-1 mark in the league and win the tie-breaker with UMass Boston by virtue of their 3-2 win over the Beacons on October 11.

The Corsairs, 8-9-1 overall, drop to 3-4 in the league and will travel to Keene State College on Tuesday, November 4 to take on the Owls in the LEC Quarterfinals.  Game time will be decided on Sunday.

Western will host the winner of the game between the Owls and Corsairs in the Semifinals on Thursday, November 6.  Game time will be decided tomorrow.

As for the game, Western scored three goals in the first half and dominated play throughout the contest.  It finished with a 29-6 advantage in shots on the night and were able to used the majority of its bench to ready for the post-season.

Junior Emily Newhard (Wallingford, CT) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the ninth minute when she tallied her fifth goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Rebecca Rivera (Monroe, CT) tied senior Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) for the team lead in goal when she deposited a pass from sophomore Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT).

Before the first half ended, DeVoe scored her fifth goal with a perfectly executed corner kick.

Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) added her fourth goal, another unassisted marker, in the 73rd minute of play.

Freshman Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) earned the victory in goal for Western after making one save.  Jenna Santoriello (Nesconset, NY) made two saves after coming on with eight minutes remaining.

Madison Boucher (Southhampton, MA) made six saves for the Corsairs before yielding her post for Nicole Butts (Milford, MA) at intermission.  Butts made five saves.
