Box Score KEENE, NH - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in Little East Conference play when it dropped a 1-0 decision in two overtimes at Keene State Saturday afternoon.
After playing to a scoreless tie through regulation and one overtime period, Western appeared poised to claim victory when the Colonials were awarded a penalty kick with just under three minutes remaining in the second overtime period.
Senior Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) delivered the PK for Western, but Keene State's keeper, senior Victoria Crenson (North Salem, NY), made the save to keep the score tied 0-0. Keene State quickly moved the ball down the field on the counter attack, and scored the game-winning goal when freshman Morgan Kathan (Ludlow, VT) beat Western's keeper, freshman Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) to give the Owls a thrilling 1-0 victory.
For the game, Keene State held a 13-11 advantage in shots, while also holding a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Fernandez finished with four saves in goal for Western, but suffers the loss. Crenson had six saves for Keene State, including two in the second overtime period, to collect the win.
With the loss, Western falls to 12-5-1 on the season, 5-1 in the Little East Conference. Keene State improves to 10-8 on the season, 4-2 in the LEC.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, October 29, when the travel to play Stevens College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
