Western women's soccer opens season with 3-2 win over Emmanuel

FARMINGDALE, NY (Aug. 30)  –  Sophomore Emily Newhard (Wallingford, CT) had one goal and one assist and freshman Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT) handed out two assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Emmanuel Friday afternoon at Farmingdale State College. 

Both teams scored late in the first half for a 1-1 draw at intermission. 

Junior Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) gave Western a 2-1 lead in the second half when she chipped a shot over the head of the Emmanuel keeper.  Emmanuel tied the score at 2-2 with an unassisted goal, but Western answered just over one minute later when freshman Meaghan Gustafson (Newington, CT) took a pass from DeVoe to give Western a 3-2 final margin of victory. 

For the game, Western held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots, and also had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.  Western keeper Alison Rettenmeier (Sherman, CT) made three saves to earn her first collegiate win. 

With the win, Western opens the season at 1-0, while Emmanuel falls to 0-1.  The Colonials continue play at Farmingdale State on Saturday, August 31st, with a game against SUNY Geneseo. Game time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
