Men's Basketball Utilizes Red-Hot Shooting to Edge Eastern

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team shot a scorching 60 percent (29-of-48) from the floor which included 80 percent (4-of-5) from three-point territory en route to an 83-77 victory at cross-state archrival Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night at Geissler Gymnasium. The Wolves didn't stop there. They also connected on 84 percent (21-of-25) of their free throw attempts.

Sophomore center Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) paced the visitors with 18 points while junior guard Elijah Jean-Guillaume (New Haven, Conn.) tallied 17 to go along with a game-high five steals. Senior forward Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) and junior guard Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) rounded out the Wolves' double figures scorers with 15 apiece.

Eastern also shot the ball relatively well but they couldn't keep up with WestConn's torrid pace. Ray Carter led the Warriors with a game-high 22 points while Drew Soltis racked up a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

WestConn captured an early 6-0 lead out of the gate when Boyce muscled in a shot from the interior. The Warriors answered with a blistering run to pull ahead before eventually stretching the margin to a 10-point advantage midway through the first half when Carter canned a trifecta. But the Wolves battled back to slice the gap to just four points, 41-37, when Boyce drained a pair from the stripe just before halftime.

The visitors kept the contest close throughout much of the second stanza before regaining the lead when Jean-Guillaume connected on a shot from the line to make it 69-68 with just under five minutes to play. The Wolves would cement the victory with a 12-4 run to close out the game. With the win, WestConn improved to 14-5 overall and 7-3 in LEC play, while the Warriors dropped to 11-7 and 3-6. The Wolves return to the court when they travel to Plymouth State for another league tilt on Saturday afternoon.
