DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team improved to 8-0 all-time against Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex. Rookie forward
Madelyn Dwyer (Poughquag, N.Y.) and sophomore forward
Shannon Anderson (New Milford, Conn.) each netted their first goals of the campaign to guide the Wolves to the 2-0 victory.
The host controlled the majority of play as they kept the ball in the Spartans' zone, finishing ahead in shots, 28-1. WestConn got on the board less than five minutes into the contest when Dwyer gathered the ball near the sideline and raced in to blast a sharp-angled shot off the Castleton goalie's fingertips and into the twine. The Wolves continued to apply heavy pressure and just missed on several scoring chances. They would head into the break up, 1-0.
Castleton came to life early in the second as they registered their first and only shot of the game when sophomore midfielder Maggie Parker (Grafton, Vt.) blasted a shot that sailed just wide of the right post. However, WestConn put a quick end to any hopes of a comeback and tallied an insurance marker in the 76th minute when Anderson chipped the ball into the net off a rebound.
The final score could have been more lopsided but Spartan senior goalkeeper Emma Ezzo (West Haven, Conn.) was sharp and finished with 12 saves. WestConn junior netminder
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) was uncontested.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 2-3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Spartans slipped to 0-5 and 0-1. WestConn returns to the field when they square up against the non-conference host University of Saint Joseph on Monday at 6 p.m.
