WestConn Field Hockey Takes Season Opener Against St. Joseph

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior forward Reagan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) had a goal and an assist and sophomore goalkeeper Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) made 14 saves to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 3-1 win over the visiting University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays in field hockey action this afternoon at Westside Stadium.  The game was the season opener for both teams and the win gives the Wolves four wins in a row over the last four years over the Blue Jays.  WestConn will play its first road game of the year on Wednesday at Dean at 4 p.m.

The first half ended scoreless, although Kilmer needed to make seven stops, as Saint Joseph outshot WestConn, 11-3, over the first two quarters.  Kilmer and Saint Joseph goalie Jaci Felix-Hull each made saves in the early going of the third quarter, before Schoen converted on a penalty stroke 6:11 into the second half for the first Wolves goal of the season.  Schoen fed freshman teammate and younger sister Ellenoire Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) for the latter's first career marker with 3:43 left in the third quarter, while Kilmer remained flawless with four more saves in the third.

Aurelia Barker made it a one-goal game with the first Blue Jay goal of the fall, scoring from Ella Schroeder just under five minutes into the fourth frame.  WestConn answered 30 seconds later when junior Cassidy Nordmann (Bethel, Conn.) batted the ball past Felix-Hull with a waist-high swing after sophomore Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) had put consecutive close shots on the Saint Joseph backstop moments earlier.  Kilmer made two more saves down the stretch, while Nordmann and Ellenoire Schoen added two defensive saves apiece to preserve the victory.  Felix-Hull finished with seven stops for the Blue Jays.
