WestConn Men's Lacrosse Dominates In LEC Finals Win Over UMass Boston

DANBURY, Conn. - Western Connecticut State University graduate Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.) scored a goal, scooped 13 ground balls, and dominated the faceoff with 19 wins in 26 attempts to lead the top-seeded Wolves to a 22-7 win over the visiting University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in the Little East Conference (LEC) Men's Lacrosse Championship Finals this afternoon at Westside Stadium.  WestConn improves to 13-6 with its 10th victory in a row and wins the league title for the second time in three seasons.  No. 2-seeded UMass Boston ends its year at 14-5.  The Wolves will represent the LEC in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

WestConn put the game out of reach in short order, scoring nine unanswered goals in the first 16:41 of the contest.  The Wolves trio of senior Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) and graduates Liam Ford (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Tyler Starrett (Redding, Conn.) each scored three of the nine tallies.  Starrett scored once more before haltftime, as WestConn led, 11-3, at the break.  Starrett and Russack-Baker scored the first two goals of the third quarter to open up a double-digit cushion that the home team maintained the rest of the way.

Ford and Duque finished with seven points each on six goals and one assist and five goals and two assists, respectively, while Starrett had five goals and one assist.  Senior midfielder Matt Sweeney (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and freshman James Krieg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) added two goals and one assist apiece.  Matt Hutchings and Jack Schartner scored twice each for the Beacons.  Junior J.J. Gitzinger (West Islip, N.Y.) paced the WestConn defense with two ground balls and three caused turnovers and freshman goalie Jake Kelly (Bethpage, N.Y.) tied a career-high with 15 saves.  James Boldy made 12 stops for UMass Boston.
