FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Western Connecticut State University softball squad split a doubleheader at non-league opponent Farmingdale State on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves were edged in the opener, 6-5, before winning an extra innings affair in the nightcap, 3-2. Rookie
Victoria Wiatrak (Cromwell, Conn.) paced WestConn with a 3-for-3 showing in Game One before graduate student
Gretchen Bunovsky (Monroe, Conn.) drove in a run with a pair of hits in Game Two.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the opener. They plated a pair of runs in the first inning before adding another in the second when senior infielder
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) stole home, extending the advantage to 3-1. Sophomore
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) widened the gap to 5-1 in the third when she ripped a double down the left field line.Â
However, the Rams rebounded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame before adding another trio in the fifth to capture a 6-5 lead. The big setbacks came courtesy of a two-run homer and steal of home from Capuano.Â
WestConn pierced the scoring column first in Game Two when a wild pitch allowed a runner to score. The hosts countered with runs in the fifth and sixth to seize a 2-1 lead. However, Ushka led off the seventh with a bunt single and eventually came around to touch home when Bunovsky roped a single to right. After being placed on second base to begin the eighth frame, Bunovsky came around to score the game-winner off an RBI groundout from junior
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.).Â
With the split, WestConn moved to 11-9 overall. They return to action when they host a doubleheader with non-conference foe Mt. Saint Mary College tomorrow at 4 p.m.Â
