DANBURY, Conn. - Senior attacker
Savannah Kom (Danbury, Conn.) tallied a game-high five goals while sophomore attacker
Isabella Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.) added a hat trick and one assist to guide the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 victory over visiting archrival Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Junior attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of scoring strikes including her team-leading 38th of the season. Sophomore middie
Morgan Brace (Brewster, N.Y.) also contributed a pair of goals for the Wolves.Â
Graduate student Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) and senior Abby Parisi (Fairfield, Conn.) notched three goals apiece to lead the Warriors.Â
Most of the statistical columns were nearly identical. However, the hosts capitalized on their scoring opportunities. With the contest knotted at 4-4 to end the first quarter, WestConn outscored Eastern in the second to snag an 8-6 halftime advantage. Kom rounded out the spurt with an unassisted marker 2:35 before the break.
Brace began the third quarter barrage with back-to-back tallies before Pota canned her 16th goal of the year, extending the lead to 11-6. The Warriors would not be able to string together a rally. Pota found the back of the net twice to begin the fourth, widening the gap to 14-7, before the Warriors scored the final two of the contest to round it out at 14-9.Â
Wolves graduate student goalkeeper
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) was stellar in between the pipes as she turned aside 15 shots. Eastern rookie netminder Maizie Rukat (Manchester, VT) recorded 11 saves. With the win, WestConn improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Eastern dropped to 7-2 and 0-1.Â
The Wolves return to the field when they travel to Keene State for an LEC tilt on Friday at 6 p.m.
