DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 5-0, and, 13-0, to the visiting University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacon in a Little East Conference (LEC) baseball doubleheader this afternoon at Westside Field. WestConn fall to 5-11 overall and 0-4 in the LEC, while the Beacons improve to 13-6 overall and 4-0 in the league. The Wolves will host Mount St. Vincent next, who they split a doubleheader with in South Carolina earlier this month, on Wednesday, April 2 at 4 p.m. Senior RHP
Max Grewal (Long Beach, N.Y.) turned in a stellar performance in game one for WestConn, allowing five hits and two runs over seven innings.
Grewal and UMass Boston starter Max Moss kept the game at 1-0 in the visitors' favor through six innings, as the Beacons had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame on an RBI single by Justin Gouveia. WestConn had baserunners in four Moss' six innings but could not push a run across. The closes chance came in the third frame when freshman 3B
Billy Untiet (Southington, Conn.) singled and junior
Peter Coniglio (New Milfotd, Conn.) walked but the Wolves left runners stranded on second and third.
In the seventh inning, UMass Boston scored again on a walk, a passed ball, and an RBI double by Elliot Miles. Logan Lawrence relieved Moss and did not allow a hit in the seventh and eighth, while the Beacon offense scored three times in the top of the eighth inning. WestConn graduate
Connor Corcoran (Danbury, Conn.) pitched the final five outs and allowed just one hit and then singled in the ninth followed by a double from sophomore OF
Richard Salonia (Bronx, N.Y.), but Lawrence got the last out on his fifth strikeout to earn a save. Grewal fell to 2-2 and Moss improved to 2-1.
UMass Boston opened up a 4-0 lead after two innings and finished with 12 hits in game two. Seniors Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) and
Charles Mulhall (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior C
Anthony Marsala (Beacon Falls, Conn.) had hits for the Wolves. Sophomore RHP
Brian Mansfield (Lynbrook, N.Y.) took the loss and fell to 1-2. John Pagano improved to 3-0, striking out eight in six innings. The game was stopped after seven frames.
