Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and sophomore infielder
Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.) combined for seven hits and eight RBI's to lift the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a pair of wins to wrap up their Florida trip on Friday. The Wolves downed Rutgers-Newark, 10-2, before storming past St. Norbert, 8-4, improving to 5-7 overall.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage in the opener against Rutgers-Newark. Malvino ignited the flurry when she ripped a double with the bases loaded, sending three runs across the plate. They continued to pour it on in the fifth and sixth frames. They extended the gap to 8-2 before senior
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) knocked an RBI triple to the gap. Shortly therafter, Malvino singled her home to round the count out at 10-2.
WestConn didn't stop in Game Two as they erupted to send eight runners across the plate. Tucci roped a single to right field in the fourth, giving the Wolves a 3-1 lead. Saint Norbert kept it close until WestConn notched a trio of runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Tucci ripped a single that the shortstop could not handle, sending two runners home and closing the contest out at 8-4.
WestConn returns to action for their home opener on March 28. They host a twin bill with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn beginning at 4 p.m.
