WestConn Baseball Thumps Apprentice To Close South Carolina Trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Sophomore RHP Jimmy Muthersbaugh (Bethel, Conn.) did not allow an earned run and struck out five over five innings to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 10-3 victory over the Newport News Apprentice School Builders in game two of a baseball doubleheader this evening at Griffith Field.  WestConn, which rallied back after a 17-0 loss in the first game, stops a six-game losing streak and heads back to Connecticut with a 4-6 record.  Sophomore Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and freshman C Elliot Kleinman (Nanuet, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run, and two RBIs to pace the Wolves offense.

WestConn junior OF Peter Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) and Vallie singled to start the game and Coniglio scored the first on a sacrifice fly bu freshman 1B Nick LoBuono (Trumbull, Conn.).  Wolves senior OF Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.) drove in a run with a double that bounced in just inside the right field line and then landed on the other side of a fence.  Kleinman gave WestConn a 3-0 lead after the first frame on a bases-loaded HBP.  Apprentice scored on an unearned run in the second frame and nearly got a bunch in the third, but Muthersbaugh struck out the side and left three Builders stranded on the bases.  Kleinman doubled home one run and both Coniglio and Vallie had run-scoring singles in the sixth inning to put WestConn ahead, 6-1.

In the seventh inning, WestConn tacked on four more insurance runs, including one on Lobuono's second sac fly, one on a double by Jake Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) and another on an RBI single by senior Anthony Piazza (Lynbrook, N.Y.).  Peter Coniglio, Barnett, and senior Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Wolves.  In the first game, Apprentice's Nolan Redman tossed a five-inning, three-hitter as the game was cut short on a facility rule.  Moeller doubled in game one and Vallie and sophomore Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) had singles.  Rookie RHP Rocco Panaro (Selden, N.Y.) took the loss in the opener for the Wolves.
