WestConn Softball Suffers Pair Of Setbacks in Space Coast Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten late by the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Trailblazers and ran into a strong pitcher in a six-inning setback versus the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds, falling, 5-4, and, 10-0, respectively, in Space Coast Games softball action this afternoon.  WestConn drops to 3-5 and looks to end a four-game losing skid against Millikin and Wisc.-Eau Claire tomorrow.  Wolves rookie Sera DeBaggis (Mendon, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a stolen base against the Trailblazers and broke up a no-hitter against Wisc.-Eau Claire.

Against MCLA, junior Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a grounder by DeBaggis.  DeBaggis came through again with a two-run single in the third frame.  The Trailblazers tied the score in the bottom of the third, but WestConn took the lead back in the fourth on a single by senior C Madison Zicchinelli (Miller Place, N.Y.) and an RBI triple by Filancia.  Massachusetts College scored twice to go ahead for good in the sixth frame.  Sophomore Benni Tucci (Norwalk, Conn.) singled and classmate Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) walked in the seventh inning, but WestConn could not push another across the plate.  Filancia, Tucci, and junior Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) each had two hits and sophomore Lindsay Farinacchio (Red Hook, N.Y.) took the loss while fanning three in five innings of relief.

Blugold starter Jacie Schultz retired the first 15 Wolves she faced before DeBaggis singled to lead off the sixth.  WestConn senior Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) followed with a single that hit DeBaggis for runner interference but the Schultz got the next two batters to end the game in a shutout due to Wisc.-Eau Claire's 10-run lead.  Wolves lefty starter Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) allowed four hits and two earned runs but was saddled with the loss in the circle.
