DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves had the lead after five innings in both games, but fell short late, 9-4, and, 4-3, to the University of Mount St. Vincent Dolphins in a baseball doubleheader this afternoon at the Ripken Experience Polo Grounds. WestConn falls to 3-4 heading into a twinbill tomorrow at 9 a.m. against the St. Joseph's University-Long Island Golden Eagles. The Dolphins improve to 8-2 and have won seven games in a row.
WestConn struck first in the bottom of the first inning of game one when sophomore CF
Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and went around to score on a groundout by classmate
Thomas Keough (Farmington, Conn.). Wolves starter
Connor Corcoran (Danbury, Conn.) allowed one run in the second and cruised through the next two frames, but the Dolphins took a 3-1 lead on solo home runs over a short right field fence by Joe DiNorcia and Connor Martin. WestConn responded right away, as sophomore
Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led off with single, senior Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) reached on an error, and Keough gave the Wolves a 4-3 lead with a blast to right field.
Mount St. Vincent broke it open, however, with six runs in the sixth frame. The game-tying run scored on a walk and the go-ahead run crossed the plate on a hit-by-pitch. Four more Dolphins scored before WestConn senior RHP
Luke Pliego (New Milford, Conn.) entered the game and ended the rally with two straight outs. The Wolves got runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings but were held scoreless. Birkl and Keough both had two hits and Keough had four RBIs. Corcoran started and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings and freshman
Brandon Payne (Milford, Conn.) took the loss in relief for the Wolves.
In the second game, WestConn freshman starter
Trey Lindsey (Windham, Conn.) allowed five hits and two runs over four innings in his career start, as the Wolves led, 2-1, through six innings. Senior OF
Charles Mulhall (Fairfield, Conn.) slammed a two-run homer well over the left field wall to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Dolphins cut that lead in half on an RBI single by Zach Turco in the bottom of the second. The score remained the same for the next four frames, as rookie reliever
Rocco Panaro (Selden, N.Y.) did not allow a hit in the fifth and sixth innings after replacing Lindsey with two runners on base in the fifth. Wolves freshman
Nick Lobuono (Trumbull, Conn.) doubled and scored an insurance run on an error in the top of the seventh, but Mount St. Vincent received an RBI double by Josh McCormick and a two-run double by DiNorcia to leave WestConn on the field. WestConn managed just three hits and Panaro took the loss on the bump.
