DAVENPORT, Fla. - Junior attacker
Madison Ratchford (Ridge, N.Y.) reeled off a game-high six goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad to a 12-10 win over Baldwin Wallace University in a non-conference matchup to open its spring trip on Saturday.
Senior attacker
Savannah Kom (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with a pair of goals and a game-high four caused turnovers, while sophomore midfielder
Morgan Brace (Brewster, N.Y.) notched a game-high nine draw controls for the Wolves. Four different players tallied two goals apiece in a well-rounded effort for Baldwin Wallace.
WestConn graduate student goalkeeper
Molly Bresnahan (Groton, Conn.) picked up her seventh win of the year en route to an eight-save performance, while Caroline Potteiger took the loss and recorded 12 saves for BWU.
It was a wild first quarter as the teams combined for 10 goals. The Wolves raced out to an early 4-1 lead. Ratchford capped the barrage with her third goal of the day. Shortly thereafter, Brace would find the back of the net, giving WestConn a 7-3 lead heading into the second stanza. The second quarter was a completely different story as both defenses buckled down and neither team recorded a tally.
The Wolves regained the momentum and poured it on in the third, netting five of the six goals. Kom sparked the flurry before Ratchford rounded out the run, extending the advantage to 12-4. However, Baldwin Wallace put forth a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth. They recorded the final six goals of the game to round it out at 12-10. Clare Alic tallied the final marker of the contest with 54 seconds remaining.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 6-1 overall while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 3-5. WestConn wraps up the trip when square off against Clarkson University on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
