WestConn Shocks UMass Dartmouth On Buzzer Beater Layup

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior Cameron Gallon (York, Pa.) made the final two of his team-high 32 points count in a bug way with a last second layup to give the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves a 96-94 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in the Little East Conference (LEC) season finale for both teams this afternoon at Tripp Athletic Center/.  WestConn wins for the ninth time in a row to finish 17-8 overall and secure the No. 2 seed and a bye in the LEC Championship Tournament next week.  UMass Dartmouth ends its regular slate at 9-16 overall and 6-10 in the league, sneaking into the LEC Tourney at the No. 6 seed.  The Wolves trailed, 92-85, with 1:32 left but scored 11 of the game's final 13 points, including seven by Gallon, to steal the victory.

WestConn senior forward Jourdan Belcher (Elmsford, N.Y.) ended a 7-0 Corsair run with a layup at the 1:23 mark and then made a steal and fed Gallon for a three-pointer moments later.  Camden DiChiara made a pair of free throws for UMass Dartmouth, to make it, 94-90, with 47 seconds on the clock, but Gallon answered with two of his own from the charity stripe.  Senior Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) made another WestConn steal and finished with a game-tying layup with 27 seconds remaining.  UMass Dartmouth was called for an offensive foul and with two ticks left Wolves junior Jahlyl Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) lofted a perfect pass from the end line to the opposite foul line that was hauled down by Belcher who calmly passed to a streaking Gallon for the clinching bucket.

The first half was highly competitive, ending in a 47-45 Corsair lead as Jones scored off an offensive rebound with 22 seconds left before the break.  DiChiara drilled a trey with 14:25 on the clock to give the home team a 10-point lead at 62-52 and the Corsairs led by 12 with 12:15 left before the Wolves fought back and took a 74-73 lead on a steal by Jones and Gallon fastbreak dunk at the 7:41 mark.  The teams traded leads multiple times until UMass Dartmouth scored seven points over 1:50 to go ahead, 92-85.  Jones and junior guard Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) joined Gallon in double figures in scoring with 14 points apiece, while DiChiara poured in 33 points for the Corsairs.  Lynch also dished four assists and made three steals and junior Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) contributed eight points and six rebounds off the Wolves bench.
