DANBURY, Conn. - Senior attackman
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) had three goals and three assists, including the game-tying goal with two seconds left in regulation and the deciding tally in overtime, to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 15-14 win over the visiting Ursinus College Bears in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Westside Athletic Complex. WestConn wins its season opener and will visit Misericordia next on Saturday at 1 p.m. Ursinus falls to 0-2.
WestConn mounted a spirited comeback after trailing the Bears, 11-7, midway through the third quarter. The Wolves scored five goals in a row to take the lead in the middle of the in the fourth stanza. Peter Traina (East Moriches, N.Y.) converted on a feed by Duque to put the Wolves up, 12-11, with 8:26 on the clock.
Ursinus answered with three goals in a row, including two by Barrett Denlinger, and led, 14-12, with 1:23 left, but Wolves sophomore middie
Sam Rosa (Trumbull, Conn.) cut the home team's deficit to one with a tally at the 40-second mark. WestConn graduate
Jonathan Russack-Baker (Groton, Conn.), who won all eight faceoffs in the fourth quarter, gave the Wolves the final possession and Duque forced the extra session when he controlled the ball after an errant pass and rifled it into the net from straight-on. In the overtime, Russack-Baker again won the faceoff and Ford shot wide three times before assisting Duque on the clincher with 1:14 on the clock.
WestConn led, 4-2, after one quarter, as Sweeney notched two goals and Duque added two assists, but the Bears outscored the Wolves, 6-2, in the second to lead, 8-6, at intermission. Senior
Nate Caldwell (Cranford, N.J.) scored early in the third for WestConn but Ursinus scored the next three to build their largest lead at 11-7. WestConn outshot Ursinus, 49-36, and led in ground balls, 38-23, but the Wolves committed 19 turnovers and were just 9-for-17 on clears. Daniel Kupiec paced the Bears offensively with a game-high five goals and Denlinger scored three times.
