Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) reeled off a triple-double while sophomore forward
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 28 points to guide the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to it's highest scoring game of the season as they upended the University of Hartford, 101-92, in a non-conference contest that took overtime on Thursday evening.
Lynch finished with 13 points to go along with game-highs of 15 boards and 12 assists. Classmate guard
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and senior forward
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) joined him in double figures with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Five players reached double figures for the Hawks who were led by Kaosi Chijioke. He canned a team-high 23 points.
The Wolves outworked the Hawks on the glass as they came away with a 45-35 edge which translated to 21 second chance scores. The WestConn bench also outscored the Hawk reserves, 28-12.
Hartford captured an early 9-5 advantage when Chijioke sank a midrange hook. But the Wolves stormed back with a 25-4 run midway through the first half. Morgan got things started as he powered down the lane for a layup before finishing off the flurry with yet another drive off a feed from Lynch. The visitors would head into halftime up 41-29.
The hosts would battle back to regain the lead when Chijioke knocked down a midrange jumper to put them ahead 59-58 with 7:08 remaining in regulation. The lead went back-and-forth the rest of the way. However, the Hawks sank a pair free throws with two seconds left before Lynch got off a heave at the buzzer that missed to make it 78-78 heading into the extra session. However, it was all Wolves in overtime as they began the stanza with a 12-0 run and would not look back.
With the victory, WestConn improved to 4-4 overall while Hartford fell to 6-4. The Wolves return to the court when they host Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
