GORHAM, ME - Junior outside hitter
Julia Stoliker (Red Hook, N.Y) tallied a match-high 19 kills against Little East Conference nemesis Southern Maine before adding another 19 kills against non-league foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute to guide the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves blanked the host Huskies, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21) before edging WPI in a five-set nailbiter, 3-2 (30-28, 24-26, 25-19, 19-25, 15-12).
The visitors wasted no time in handing the hosts their 19th loss of the season. Senior setter
Maggie Ferguson (Southbury, Conn.) dished out a match-high 33 assists while classmate
Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.) drilled a match-high five service aces.
The second match of the day was more compelling. WestConn earned back-to-back points to cap a wild opening set win, 30-28, when rookie outside hitter
Hallie Robillard (Middletown, Conn.) floored a shot before junior
Ali Rondeau (Carmel, N.Y.) ripped an ace to the hardwood.
WPI answered in another hard-fought set, 26-24. WestConn held a 22-18 lead before Worcester rattled off a 4-0 run. A Wolves' hitting error would even the match at 1-1. The squads then exchanged 25-19 victories setting up a dramatic fifth and final stanza. Senior middle hitter
Delia Clouden (Newtown, Conn.) rosed above the net with a solo block to put WestConn ahead 10-7. But WPI retaliated to knot the count at 11-11. The Wolves tallied four of the next five points to secure the win.
With the victories, WestConn improved to 16-6 overall and 3-3 in LEC play. Southern Maine fell to 7-19 and 1-5 while WPI moved to 9-12. The Wolves get some time to practice before they host LEC opponent Rhode Island College on Saturday at Noon.
