DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore goalkeeper
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) made nine saves but the Western Connecticut State University Wolves fell just short in a 1-0 loss to the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals in women's soccer action this evening at Westside Stadium. WestConn sees its three-game winning streak, falling to 6-3-1 and the Cardinals stay undefeated at 5-0-1. The Wolves will visit Little East Conference (LEC) rival Castleton next on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The game was scoreless into the 68th minute when a Wesleyan player was taken down in the box near the left sideline and the WestConn foul gave the Cardinals a penalty kick that converted just to Regan's right by Katie O'Connell. WestConn junior
Hannah Blacher (Allendale, N.J.) got off a clear shot from just outside the box in the 81st minute and Wesleyan thwarted a Wolves corner kick moments later, as the Wolves were unable to put any points on the board.
Regan was stellar in the Wolves goal, making several difficult stops from the Wesleyan offense that outshot WestConn, 21-6. WestConn senior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) worked her was past the Cardinal defense and nearly scored in the 12th minute of play, but her shot from the left corner caromed off the post. Kerenza Leahey shot just high for Wesleyan in the 52nd minute, while Regan and Cardinal goalie Juiiette Vemmer combined for six saves over a nine-minute period before O'Connell's goal. Vemmer finished with three saves and Blacher paced the Wolves with three shots.
