WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves trailed by a point after three quarters, but the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays used a 24-point fourth quarter to pull away for a 70-60 win in women's basketball action this evening at Calhoun Gymnasium. WestConn falls to 2-4 and the Blue Jays improve to 2-2. The Wolves will open Little East Conference (LEC) play on Sunday at home against the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons at 1 p.m. Freshman C/F
Nia Rencher (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) had 23 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks for WestConn. Junior guard
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) and senior guard
Nicole Peralta (North Windham, Conn.) joined Rencher in double figures in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively, as each made three from long range. Jordan Ouellette led all scorers with 30 points.
St. Joseph used a 13-2 run to turn a 66 tie into a 19-8 lead in the first quarter. Dingle made a three-pointer with 1:01 on the clock to make the score, 19-12, at the first break. The Wolves outscored the Blue Jays, 15-9, in the second frame, including the first five by Dingle, the next seven by Rencher and the last three on a trey by Peralta in the final minute to make the score, 28-27, at halftime.
