Alfano Nets Game-Winner to Propel Women's Soccer Past Eastern

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior forward Adriana Alfano (New Milford, Conn.) drilled the game-winning goal with exactly one minute remaining in the contest to propel the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over archrival Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference battle at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.

With the win, WestConn improved to 9-5-2 overall and 4-1 in league play, while Eastern sank to 3-8-2 and 1-2-2. It also marked the Wolves' seventh straight win over the Warriors.

The hosts garnered the first high quality scoring opportunity midway through the first half when junior Hannah Blacher (Allendale, N.J.) fired a shot that was turned aside by Eastern rookie keeper Alex Ignatowicz (Coventry, Conn.). Alfano gathered the rebound and ripped yet another shot but Ignatowicz halted that effort as well. Blacher had another chance to pierce the scoring column just before halftime when she turned inside the box and launched the ball just inches over the crossbar.

The Warriors nearly broke through midway in the second stanza when senior Olivia Davidson (Waterford, Conn.) dribbled in and fired a blast that sailed wide of the left post. With the contest appearing to be destined for a stalemate, junior backer Annie Sobolewski (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) chipped a pass over to Alfano who then chased it down to knock a header over the goal line, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

WestConn sophomore netminder Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) earned the win and notched four saves, while Ignatowicz took the loss and finished with seven saves. The Wolves return to action when they travel to LEC foe UMass Boston on Saturday at Noon.
