WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University softball team split a pair of non-conference games at University of St. Joseph, dropping the opener, 6-3, before capturing the nightcap, 5-1 at USJ Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Third baseman
Jada Miconi got the start at the hot corner and went 2-for-2 with a run batted in and scored a pair of runs. She got the scoring started for the Wolves with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. Two batters later, she and
Carly Cordova came around to score when
Brianna Malvino reached on a throwing error from the hosts.
WestConn, now 14-14, went up 4-0 in the same inning when this week's Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, pushed Malvino across the dish when she was hit by a pitch bases-loaded.
The Wolves closed out their scoring in the sixth inning when Miconi scored after combining with
Rachael Ushka with a pair of stolen bases.
Freshman
Benni Tucci went 3-for-4 from the lead-off spot for the Wolves, which scattered eight hits in the victory.
Sydney Chenoweth earned the victory on the pitching plate and is now 4-3 on the season. She went the distance and allowed one run on seven hits and struck out one. At the plate, Chenoweth belted a triple and scored the game's first run.
In the opener, sophomore
Karly Vito fell to 1-2 after surrendering six runs on 10 hits through three and two-third innings. She struck out two and walked one.
Offensively, Ushka moved into the two spot in the line up and went 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
Malvino went 2-for-2 and joined Tucci with a run scored.
USJ sits with a 14-13 record following the split.
WestConn plays host to Mount St. Mary College on Thursday to cap off three-straight days of doubleheaders. Game time at Westside Field is set for 4 pm.
