Western women fall at Vassar College, 3-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Freshmen Katie Voegtlin (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) finished with a goal and two assists, as Vassar knocked off Western Connecticut State 3-0 Wednesday afternoon. Voegtlin's first half goal at Gordon Field proved to be the game-winner, as the Brewers added two scores in the second to earn their third shutout victory of the season. VC improves to 4-2 on the year with the win, while Western Connecticut drops to 3-4 with the loss.

The Colonials came out firing early in the first half, forcing Brewer goalkeeper Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) to make three saves in the opening minutes. The Brewer defense hung tough through the pressure, limiting scoring chances for the Colonials despite allowing nine first half shots.

Voegtlin finally broke into the scoring column in the 33rd minute, after a high, towering ball from senior Sarah Bourenane landed just in front of the 18-yard box. A charging Voegtlin zipped a Western Connecticut defender, and chipped the out of position goalie to give her side a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) added to the lead after a pass from Voegtlin on the right wing found the senior captain in front of the box. Wheeler touched past the defender then fired a shot into the right side of the net to put the Brewers up 2-0.

Voegtlin set up the team's final goal in the 83rd minute, after she played a precise through ball to a streaking Emily Krebs (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) in the center of the pitch. Krebs dribbled the ball into the left side of the box, then took a strike into the right corner that beat the outstretched keeper.

The Vassar backline was impenetrable in the second half, allowing only two shots in the final 45 minutes of play with neither going on target. Nichols along with sophomore Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) combined to earn the shutout in goal for VC.

The Brewers will return to action on Saturday, September 20 when the team hosts Manhattanville College at 2:30 pm on Gordon Field.
