Box Score 2 DANBURY, CT - Sophomore midfielder Emily Newhard (Wallingford, CT) headed home the game-winner in double overtime as the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team defeated Vassar College, 2-1 at The WAC on Wednesday night.
Newhard headed the ball into the back of the net, from the left side of the goal mouth, following the corner kick from Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT) with 1:03 remaining in the second extra session.
Vassar College got on the scoreboard when Kelsey Domb (Round Rock, TX) was left alone at the top right-hand side of the box following a throw in by Becki Pearce-Probst (Cambridge, MA). Without a body on her, Domb was able to turn and deposit the ball into the top left corner of the goal.
Senior midfielder Ariana D'Aurio (Cheshire, CT) evened the score, 1-1, when she finished off a flury of shots in the 78th minute. Joanna Weir (Hebron, CT) triggered the three-shot barrage while D'Aurio collected a deflection of her own show for the tying marker.
Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY) made two fabulous saves before falling victim to D'Aurio's powerful right footer.
Alison Rettenmeier (Sherman, CT) made eight saves for the Colonials, now 5-2 on the season.
With three minutes remaining in the first overtime, Vassar supplied the extra periods only threat as its front line rattled off three straight attempts at a game-winner, but Rettenmeier snuffed out tries from Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO), Kelsey Hamm (Wilmington, NC) and Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA).
The Brewers, 3-3-1 intended on splitting time with their keepers. Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA) made two saves in the first 45 minutes before yielding to Tapolsky for the remainder of the contest. Tapolsky made 10 saves.
