Keene State College crowned Little East Conference champions following 2-0 snow-shortened victory over Western Connecticut on Saturday

Box Score

DANBURY, CT — The Keene State College women's soccer team captured the 2011 Little East Conference regular-season title following Saturday's 2-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University at snow-drenched Westside Athletic Complex.

The Owls, 13-7 overall, finished with an unblemished 7-0 record in the LEC and will be the top seed heading into the leagues post-season tournament. They earn a first-round bye and will await the winner of the #4 UMass Boston versus #5 UMass Dartmouth quarterfinal winner from Tuesday.

The Colonials drop to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the LEC and will be the #3 seed and host #6 seed Plymouth State University at The WAC on Tuesday. Game time will be determined either on Sunday or early Monday.

Saturday's game was played under heavy snow from beginning until the referee called the game at the 75 minute mark. Nearly three inches of snow had already covered the turf by that point.

Alex Haley (Laconia, NH) put Keene State on the scoreboard in the 35th minute of play when she was left open at the top of the box. A quick feed from Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, MA) set up Haley's shot that sailed over the outstretched had of Western keeper Caitlin Avery (East Hampton, CT) and into the back of the net.

Just 3:52 into the second half, Berthiaume added an insurance goal when she took advantage of Avery's unfortunately slippage in the goal mouth. Berthiaume deposited her team leading ninth goal after Hayley Kenyon's (Exeter, RI) initial shot drew Avery off her line.

KSC's Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, MA) made four saves while Avery turned away six shots for the Colonials.

Western honored its four senior prior to the start of the game. Jillian Duran (Uncasville, CT), Lauren Francisco (Ludlow, MA), Lindsey LaConche (Rocky Hill, CT) and Felicia McGarry (Waterford, CT) played in their last regular-season game on Saturday.
